The complexities of adverbs present an interesting challenge to computational linguistics. This paper describes our work in building an adverbial lexicon, which draws on the theoretical work of several linguists to help us to cope with the complexity of the adverb class. Our lexicon contains information from many sources including machine readable dictionaries, a dictionary of adverb placement, and special collections of adverbial information developed by linguists. These sets of information have been organized and linked together using the information in the Machine Readable Dictionaries as a basic structure and using the Oracle Relational Database Management System. The paper includes a description of ways in which this lexicon can be used by natural language processing systems.
