Current Lexicography Practice in Bantu with Specific Reference to the Oxford Northern Sotho School Dictionary

  Abstract

The aim of this article is to provide a perspective on lexicographic traditions, lemmatisation strategies and lemmatisation approaches in Bantu language dictionaries from a South African point of view. It will be argued that Bantu language lexicography reflects a complex interplay of lexicographic traditions and lemmatisation approaches. The focus will be on Sepedi1 – English dictionaries and on the analysis of the Oxford Northern Sotho School Dictionary, henceforth (ONSD). The ONSD will be evaluated in terms of the presumed best practices in terms of lemmatisation and against the background of the user-perspective.
